Knob sticking technique

Reset. (Push the shackle in twice.)
For each direction, Up, Left, Right and Down:
1. Move the knob in that direction, but hold the knob at the end of its travel.
2. Apply light-to-moderate opening tension on the shackle, enough to bind just one internal disk.
3. Release the knob, seeing whether the knob sticks or slides freely back to the center.
The knob should slide freely back to center during exactly 1 move, and stick during the other 3 moves.

What move allows the knob to slide freely back to center?

Incremental stepping technique

This uses the knob sticking technique from our last page.

Reset.
We'll go one move at a time in a () pattern, repeating from the beginning when we reach the end.
For each move in the pattern:
1. Make a full move in the given direction.
2. Then move outward in the () direction, but hold the knob at the end of its travel.
3. Using the knob sticking technique, check if the knob slides freely back to center.
4. If the knob sticks, go to step (b). While the knob continues sticking, repeat the process 5 times.
5. We're looking for the knob to stick during all 5 moves.
The fence might move into the gate for two moves in the pattern — the correct move, and the one immediately before.
So as you go around, when there are two consecutive moves that stick, the second move should be the location of the true gate.
